Upgrade Your Science Class

The goal of the Science Bits project is to provide teachers with tools that promote high quality science education. This common goal is shared by everyone in the Science Bits team—a multidisciplinary team of science teachers, educators, video editors, and multimedia professionals from all around the world who work within the framework of the International Science Teaching Foundation.

The Science Bits team has directed all its efforts towards creating an outstanding repository of multimedia science lessons for middle and high school teachers. Science Bits adheres to the constructivist 5E learning model, which promotes real understanding and engages students in science learning while helping them understand the relevance of science to their lives. Its lessons are clearly structured around the 5E model, meticulously argued at a pedagogical level, and enriched with a wide array of multimedia learning objects designed to capture the attention of digital native students and enhance their learning experience.

Science Bits wants to play an active role in promoting the change from a transmission educational model—based on the transmission of facts from teacher to learner—to a constructivist one—based on inquiry, discovery, and learning-by-doing. And the best way to bring about this change is to empower teachers with user-friendly tools of great educational potential and to do so at an international level.

Science Bits has firmly established itself in the education community only eight years after its launch. It is currently being used by almost 2,000 schools around the globe. The scientific approach to science teaching and learning adopted by Science Bits has won it more than 20 international awards. One such award is the Academics’ Choice Smart Book for Mind-Building Excellence, selected by a jury of academics from leading universities such as Princeton, Harvard, George Washington University, and other renowned educational institutions. Other awards include the United Nations World Summit Award, the CSIC Science in Action award (Spain’s largest public research body), the Qatar Foundation’s WISE Award, and the CODiE Award from the association for the software and digital content industries of the US.

The Science Bits proposal is a key step towards integrated teaching and learning in the STEM fields. Science is not a body of immutable facts that must be memorized but rather an exciting way of obtaining new knowledge and understanding the world around us.

The Mysteries of Black Holes

Science fiction has envisioned black holes destroying Earth or enabling humans to travel to other parallel universes. In fact, when the Large Hadron Collider, a particle accelerator in Geneva, began operating in 2008, some scientists suggested that it could generate microscopic black holes. This sparked alarm over the possibility of Earth being consumed by one. But are these concerns justified? What would really happen if we fell into a black hole? And, more simply, what exactly is a black hole?
